The student develops his or her revision skills by learning how authors craft sentences and by imitating authors to craft his or her own sentence. The student improves his or her editing and revision skills by developing the habit of noticing. The student uses legible handwriting.\nStrand 1 – The student learns and uses the academic vocabulary of grammar. \nWorkshop Agenda \nMentor Sentences is a one-day workshop day. He was being told\, she explains\, that “if he likes sentences he could begin\,” and she remembers a similar conversation with a painter friend. “I asked him how he came to be a painter. He said\, ‘I like the smell of paint.'” The point\, made implicitly (Dillard does not belabour it)\, is that you don’t begin with a grand conception\, either of the great American novel or masterpiece that will hang in the Louvre. You begin with a feel for the nitty-gritty material of the medium\, paint in one case\, sentences in the other.”  ― Stanley Fish \n___________\nMentor Sentences is a Growing Strong Writers workshop.\nGrowing Strong Writers Workshop Series with Alice Nine is attentive to the importance of daily writing practice\, the complex demands of learning English\, and a desire to cultivate a love for writing \nThese workshops offer super simple\, no nonsense\, can-use-it-tomorrow routines and strategies. Workshops are interactive with teachers doing the work of a student to step-by-step experience the routines themselves. to examine routine procedures and management\, and to clarify\, connect\, and expand personal knowledge. Alice also shares practical ideas for adapting routines to meet diverse student needs and the demands of writing across core curriculum. \nOther Growing Strong Writer workshops:  How We Write\, Writing with Authors\, Sentence Combining\, Poetry Fridays\, Morning Pages\, Small Writing\, Poetry Notebook.

SUMMARY:Crafting Sentences with Mentor Texts
DESCRIPTION:with Harney ESD\, Burns\, Oregon\nWrite well-crafted sentences with Alice Nine and learn the basics of an easy to implement\, sentence-crafting routine she calls Ape the Author.  Using this imitation routine\, students develop sentence writing skills through close encounters with words\, phrases\, grammatical structures\, and sentence rhythms used by great storytellers.\nIn this workshop\, teachers will:\n•    Examine the how-to basics of Ape the Author\n•    Create their own well-crafted sentences using the routine\n•    Search literature for mentor sentences that can work for their students\n[Teachers should bring some samples of literature they use in their classroom.] \n—AM session with an eye on grades K-2  (8:30 – 12:00)\n—PM session with an eye on grades 3-5  (12:30-4:00)\nTeachers may attend the entire day\, regardless of grade level. Alice Nine will do a minimum of repetition from one session to the other. The routine is great for middle school also. \nAbout Ape the Author\nIn his essay “The Sedulous Ape\,” Robert Louis Stevenson shares how he developed his writing skills —through journaling\, copy work\, and imitation. He wrote\, “Whenever I read a book or a passage that particularly pleased me\, I must sit down at once to ape that quality.” Inspired by these words\, Alice Nine developed a sentence-crafting routine she calls Ape the Author.
