SOL25-0923

I step out onto my back porch.
In the darkness that precedes this mid-August dawn, I sip my coffee and savor the damp coolness that has drifted in from the sea and lifted the fragrance of fading lavender and blooming peppermint.
I listen for chirping sounds of small things, for morning songs of birds. But I hear only the whoosh of an occasional car accelerating down our hill.
I hear the faint distant roar of early PDX departures. I image the roar is the wakening yawns of a stirring beast, pushing against the quiet softness of a slumbering city. I think of the hundreds of mornings I’ve sat inside a roaring beast, making my commute to distant places, and I am thankful for this morning at home on my back porch.
I step off the porch and turn my face upward to the faint light of morning spreading across the sky, turning it a soft pink behind the dark silhouettes of towering trees.
My heart rejoices in a new day, and I thank my Father for His great faithfulness.
It is of the Lord’s mercies
that we are not consumed
because his compassions fail not.
They are new every morning:
great is thy faithfulness.
–Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV)

You have captured the magical sights and sounds of a late summer morning where the peace rises to meet those lucky enough to appreciate the moment in time. Your imagery is breath taking!
So much imagery here and you managed to carry the reader right along with you. Beautiful slice.
“I think of the hundreds of mornings I’ve sat inside a roaring beast, making my commute to distant places, and I am thankful for this morning at home on my back porch.”
I love this line, especially as I am fully embracing slow mornings after years of being in the classroom. Your descriptions are gorgeous. Thank you for sharing this piece!
I can smell the coffee, the sea, the lavender, and the peppermint. What peace it brings. Thank you for sharing this beautiful day. I love the song – “Great is HIs faithfulness to Me,” but I didn’t know where in the bible it came from. Thank you for this. Have a blessed day.
I agree, one of my favorite hymns. I’ve sung it hundreds of times. It’s one of the hymns we taught to young children in their Sunday morning services.
