Tuesday Slice of Life : November 22, 2016.
It is early. The sun has not yet risen; windows are still black with night. Waiting at Gate A4, sipping a steamy, creamy morning coffee, I casually watch fellow passengers as they gather. That’s when I see her.
She is bent over slightly, seemingly weighed down by her long winter coat, a plaid in shades of burgundy and gray. Her yellowed white hair pulled back in a bun at the nape of her neck is mostly hidden under a soft burgundy beret. Her step is slow and halting, causing me to notice her soft winter boots. A travel bag is draped over her shoulder, but I don’t notice it’s color or design because at that moment she turns toward me, and I see her face.
Lined with living, her face carries memories of laughter and sorrow. Her eyes beneath the beret that’s pulled low on her forehead are clear. Surprisingly, they look younger than her hair or posture. I am drawn to the watery blueness of them, a sharp contrast to her olive complexion. Her mouth curves with a lingering smile.
She moves toward the gate and I glance away, but her voice draws me back. Melodiously her accent rises and falls against her words. And then she smiles—a flash that illuminates her face and bursts forth like rays of a winter sun. Under its warmth, the gate agent’s face relaxes and casts back a smile. Such a beautiful thing to behold!

What a great sketch you have written of this traveller. I wonder what other stories she holds. She certainly seems like she has lived a lot of them!

A vivid description of the woman. A smile…a gift that is free to give and means so much to the one receiving it. Happy Thanksgiving.
Smiles to you!
Beautiful! I saw every wrinkle, those eyes and that smile.
Thank you, Liz! She boarded a plane out of ELP. I smile even now when I think of her.
