Workshop Summary

Alice Nine will show you how to integrate the following during Word Study lessons, without worksheets:

phonemic awareness with sounds and syllables —
systematic, explicit phonics —
handwriting instruction —
spelling practice —
word grammar —
and how-to sound out words for both reading and writing

Alignment with new ELAR TEKS

Daily Word Study with content (phonograms and words) and routines of JCSpell provide ongoing opportunities to address
Strand 1– The student develops word structure knowledge through phonological awareness, print concepts, phonics, and morphology to communicate, decode, and spell (encode) during the daily JCSpell lesson routines, i,e., Think to Spell, Word Talk. The student uses newly acquired vocabulary expressively through oral and written sentences during Word Talk.
Strand 6 — The student composes legible texts during I-Work. The student composes sentences and uses appropriate conventions during I-Work.

Who should attend?

All teachers, especially elementary since phonics is now part of the new ELAR TEKS, for grades 4-5 as well as K-3.  This is especially great for ELLs. Alice Nine recommends it for core instruction; however, it can be used Tier 2 intervention, especially at secondary level.
