We check into our hotel and then head to Walmart to pick up a couple items. As I hunt for the items I need, Carl goes to get me a hand-held shopping basket. But he returns with a clank-clank-clanking shopping cart. He leaves it with me saying he is going to look at something, but he is sure he will have no trouble locating me with the noise that cart is making. Do you think he got that noisy cart deliberately?
I pushed the cart . . . and with a clank-clank-clankity, I move into the cosmetic aisle. Two ladies come into the aisle, and as it often happens when three women are looking at cosmetics, we exchange comments about a couple products.
Well, as we chat, I push my cart off to the side so I can look closer at items on the shelf. Carl, who has finished shopping, stealthy walks up behind me, reaches out and takes hold of my cart by the front, and begins to slowly move it away from me.
One of the ladies frantically says to me, “I think he is taking your cart!” To which Carl flatly replies, “That’s right! I AM taking her cart!” She registers shocked disbelief. Well, I’m grinning so big my eyes are nearly squinted shut, and I gesture toward Carl and say, “I’m with him.” And then I cordially thank the lady for looking out for me.
Then Carl, enjoying the reactions he has created, matter-of-factly adds, “Don’t worry, I know it is a cardinal sin for a man to steal a lady’s shopping cart.”
The second lady, who was squatting down to look at something, is now laughing so hard she can hardly keep her balance. Between laughs she manages, “Only in Walmart…” To which Carl adds, “… in Brownwood, Texas.” To which I say nothing because laughing has left me unable to speak.
Laughter, even with strangers, is good.
