   The poet listens….and observes. I’ve been working on inference with metaphorical poetry, an area of difficulty for my fourth graders. They can observe and write, but only literally; it is harder for them to dig beneath the surface of a poet’s language.

     Yes, it is hard for them. According to development charts… most of a fourth grader’s thinking is still done about actual physical objects, working literally with text. They are on the edge developmentally of handling abstract thinking and finding universal themes vs. message vs. facts. I find this to be evident when working with truisms.
