A Photo Exchange: More than Meets the Eye
A Guest Post by Cathy Miller
Last month Margaret at Reflections on the Teche invited her readers to participate in “More than Meets the Eye” photo exchange. I eagerly joined in, but somehow I missed that I needed a blog to share the photo from my partner and the poem that I would write. The long and short of it? Alice Nine and I were paired, and I’m posting as a guest on her blog.
Sweet Pacific harbor seals
Sunning on a rock!
Looking ‘round from left to right–
Each one taking stock.
Hoping for a jumping fish
Or, perhaps, a school!
Readying themselves to dive
In that giant pool!
Oh, how warm the sunshine feels
On their spotted skins.
So delighted are those seals–
As noted by their grins!
Ah, to be a harbor seal
Lazing all the day…
Makes me long for summertime
When its MY turn to play!

And here’s the red fox, the one I see from my window, the one I shared with Alice, the one she wrote her poem about.

What a beautiful photo you had to work with! Your poem is a perfect pairing with its playfulness and rhythm. Happy summer vacation!
I was trying to get around to all the poems from PF and missed yours. Sorry about that. I love this frolicking poem about the seals. They are funny creatures, aren’t they? Your rhyme matches the rhythm and the subject of your poem. Thanks for finding a way to participate!
Oh, to be a seal “sunning on a rock” and “lazing all the day!” Love Alice’s photo and your sweet poem!
What a fun poem! I love the rhythm and playfulness of it. Welcome to Poetry Friday!
I really enjoyed the frolicsome feel that your rhyme added to this photo. Those seals do look perched on the edge of an adventure! I’m so glad that you and Alice worked out your guest blog so that you could participate.
Thank you! Alice was so gracious and helpful!
Such a great poem for a great photo. Thanks for sharing. It made me smile.
Delightful poem Cathy, it sings all the way through, thanks!
The seals were so cute to write about!
Thank you!
Thanks for the opportunity, Alice!
Thanks for your kind words!
Thank you!
This turned into even MORE of a collaboration! Love how you two worked it out.
Thank you for giving me a moment to pretend I’m a basking seal!
Thank you so much! Tgis was such a fun experience!
Cathy, how wonderful that you and Alice exchanged photos and wrote with such passion. Your poem is a delight (grabbing one of your words). Great line: So delighted are those seals–
As noted by their grins! The end line turns the playful poem from seals to the narrator.
Wonderful and “play-filled” Cathy. I love the voice put into the seals’ life, great rhythm and rhyme!
Catherine, I love the fun that emerges with the rhyme and rhythm. I really do want to go play with those seals. Fabulous poem….AND guest post. Lazing all the day…..I wish!
Thanks! Hope you find some days to laze soon!
Such a fun poem about these sunning harbor seals. Here’s to finding your time in the sun soon.
I’m looking forward to it! 12 more days!
Cathy, I love your poem. It is so full of voice, a rollicking fun voice. And I love the rhyme; I don’t use much rhyming in my poetry. I really should try that more.
