Celebrate this Week : February 4, 2017.

This week I’m celebrating my littlest granddaughter and the race of life.

EM, youngest of my daughter’s children, spreads much delight in our family–

Her ready smile
Some silly laughter
Eyes that sparkle
Footsteps that bounce
Outstretched arms quick to hug
Sweet voice so full of light
Her simple insights that are really profound

Insight from EM.

It is Wednesday, three days before EM‘s fourth birthday.

The day is pristine — a warm winter sun in a cloudless sky, mountains covered with fresh snow rising against a blue horizon. The four big brothers are filling the van with their chatter while little EM, sitting up in her safety car seat, quietly watches the freeway traffic zooming outside her window.

A car comes alongside her window—zooming up a bit, falling back, then hanging in beside them, then zooming ahead a bit. Then suddenly, they zoom ahead, leaving the car behind.

It is then that EM speaks up in her sweet, knowing voice: “It’s a race, huh, Daddy?”

Just run.

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. And so, it doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle: when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.

The race is not always to the swift.

Let no one hinder you.

You were running well; who hindered you from obeying the truth?

The promise I rely on.

But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.
–Isaiah 40:31

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13
