March 2026 Slice of Life, No. 6

From a free writing in my summer journal

Tonight I’ve taken pleasure in simple things.

• Eating an enormous piece of pizza
• Chatting with my son as he grilled 24 cheeseburgers for his kids, cousins, and friends
• Hearing the shouts and laughter of my grandkids as they played away the final hours of daylight
• Enjoying a cool evening breeze coming in our back screen door
• Sipping a tall glass of ice water with a lime slice
• Listening to the familiar soft humming of a floor fan
• Marking time with the steady tick of our old kitchen clock

And then my husband, walking into the kitchen, said: “I love you.”

Serenity

Life is good
My heart is full
My mind at peace
My body’s well
Tonight
Sleep will be sweet
