From my devotional journal…
“And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the Lord go out before, …” -2 Samuel 5:24
I like the sound of wind in the tops of trees. Sometimes, especially when the leaves are end-of-summer dry, it is a rustling. Sometimes it’s a whispering. But sometimes it is a howling.
When I hear the wind in the tree tops, I’m reminded of the story in 2 Samuel of God providing victory. I like reading the biblical narratives. Though they happened long ago, they speak to my spirit today. And so, today, I re-read that story and wrote this verse to myself.
Are you listening–
Listening for the sound,
The sound of a going,
Of God moving, of victory?
Be listening, and
When you hear the
Sound of a going,
Awaken.
Bestir yourself.
Rouse your senses,
Get moving,
Look lively.
Don’t miss that sound,
For It is the sound of
The Lord going out
Before you.

Alice, I am answ3ering later than I should have but I did wnat to say that your poem holds inspiratiuon. t is the sound of/The Lord going out/Before you. I like to think that the Lord comes before me when I hear nature calling. Combining nature with the act of listening will make me think of the Lord nearby.
It is always good to listen and know that God goes before us clearing and lighting our way.
Thank you, Alice! Beautiful poem. Just what I needed. I am bestirred!
Such a lovely poem capturing the magic of the breeze through the tops of the trees. In this late summer stage of the year, the presence of the breeze is a reminder to me to capture the day as the new season is ready to blow into our lives.
Alice, what a wonderful poem in response to the story in 2 Samuel. I love your emphasis on listening to God at work, don’t miss it, always listen. Lovely verse.
Alice,
Your poem is a lovely response to the verse you shared. It reminds me of some books I read many years ago: The Singer, The Song, and The Finale. I think the author’s name was Calvin Miller. Thee books are allegorical retellings of various parts of the bible. I think about the bible often these days, but I don’t attend church. I do read Pastor Ben Cremer’s newsletter and social media posts. Are you familiar with/ him? He’s gained quite a following this past year.
I’m not familiar with Ben Cremer… I will check him out. And I’ve not read Calvin Miller’s books. When you said they are allegorical biblical retellings, I thought of Francine Rivers’ “Redeeming Love” an allegory for the biblical story of Hosea and Gomer. You might enjoy her book. Thanks for sharing.
