A Bite of a Slice is a moment within a Slice of Life.
A Travel Bite is the retelling of a traveling moment that I captured in real time.
Travel Journal: Lift-off
December 4, 2013, 5:00 am
This morning,
in the darkness before dawn,
the door closes and
latches with a clunk.
We push away from the gate,
lumber onto the runway
and stop.
The plane shudders as engines accelerate.
The cabin fills with their roar.
Suddenly, like an arrow we thrust forward,
faster and faster, pushed against our seats
until we feel the lightness of the lift.
We rise above land shadowed by clouds,
and In a split second, our cabin floods
with incredible blinding brightness.
We rise and rise, into the light;
the gray falls away; we’ve gone
from darkness into light of a new day.
Such a contrast!
Such an incredibly fast transition!
Such a feeling of exhilaration!
I look out the window. The clouds are below and snow-capped mountain peaks rise above them, silhouettes against the brilliant fiery horizon. My spirit ponders the words of Jesus: “ I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.” (John 12:46 NKJV)

Backstory of Travel Bites.
I’ve crisscrossed the country for more than thirty years, traveling to and from schools to conduct professional development events. In those years, I’ve flown nearly six million miles and achieved life membership as Executive Platinum — a coveted status as a top-tier frequent flyer with American Airlines.
As I’ve waited hour after hour in airports and flown miles upon miles, I jotted down running notes in real time, recording sights, sounds, smells that surrounded me. Capturing the people. Questioning. Pondering. I wrote on sticky notes. On napkins. On the flyleaves and endsheets of my book. In my tiny pocket journal. Rarely on my cell phone. (When I’m on the go, I’m a pencil-paper writer.)
What I wrote then is the inspiration and words of a Travel Bite now.

Alice, I would love to see the world and meet all the people, too!
I love flying and could appreciate your story lifting up into a light filled sky, and I like your blog title, ‘Travel Bites’.
For me, take off is always a mixture of exhilaration and trepidation.
A true writer, keeping notes along the way. Thanks for this beautiful light-filled poem.
