A Bite of a Grandma Slice

Conversation with a three-year-old.
Prologue.
I am Me, the Grandma; BN is a three-year-old, my grandson.
I’m preparing lunch; BN is pulling a chair up to the kitchen table.
On the table is my husband’s MacBook Pro — OPEN.
Act I.
BN, pointing to the MacBook with inquisitive voice: “Cumpooer?”
I am not too worried because BN is usually good about not getting into things. So I keep working and rather flatly say: “It’s Grandpa’s.”
I glance at BN.
Act II.
BN, without taking eyes off the screen: “BN’s?”
Me, emphatically as I move toward the kitchen table: “Grandpa’s!”
Act III.
BN, just as emphatically with positivity: “It’s BN’s.”
Me, as I reach over, close the laptop, and move the temptation to a safer place: “It’s Grandpa’s.”
Epilogue.
BN reluctantly relinquishes ownership of Grandpa’s laptop and moves to help me with lunch.

Great format – and great “bite of a slice”. Computers are certainly shiny things that more age groups than toddlers want. Glad BN’s Grandma said no!
Thanks, Amanda. Amazing how quickly toddlers learn to use devices and want them.
I love these interactions with our grandchildren. Glad BN did not get into Grandpa’s computer!
I’m glad you stopped by, Linda.
Alice, so fun! BN knows what he wants.
Thank you, Denise. I love little kids who know what they want as long as they have self-control. A good sign of future leaders.
Grasping the idea of ownership – – wow! That’s a precious way to share the conversation and the way you are teaching her! Sweet times!
Thanks for stopping by. Ownership is a big thing with three-year-olds.
Love this exchange. I guess there is an age where a toddler thinks everything is theirs. Love how you closed the laptop and removed temptation.
It is a wonderful learning age… filled with challenges.
I am spending time with a three year old. I need to capture in writing more of our conversations. She certainly has a strong will. Is that the norm for a toddler?
Oh Margaret! Capture it. You think you will remember, but you won’t, not the details. Write it down. Snap pictures. You cannot make up stories as good as what actually happens. Even if you do nothing with it now, you will love having it later for memories and for writing material. I wish I would have done more. Sounds like you have an independent leader in the making. Being grandma is a different land.
Clever format to share this little bite! I also like how you capture the sound of BN’s words. In years to come, BN will enjoy reading this mini-slice!
Thank you, Sally. We actually are in the “years to come” stage as BN is now 18. It’s fun sharing snapshots (pictures and words) about his toddler years.
